Are you noticing a slight pain in your knees after climbing a flight of stairs? Are you noticing that your knees look a little bent when you try on your favourite, tight, trendy jeans? You are in slight discomfort, but still able to do all your daily activities. So, you ignore the pain, or in worse cases, you might try some home remedies like keeping a hot water bag, ice packs, or applying over-the-counter pain relievers which give you momentary relief.

However, you slowly realize that this minor discomfort is turning into a major problem and every step you take is becoming very painful. As time progress, the slight pain is becoming more frequent, and you are starting to look more bowlegged in your favourite jeans. You change your gait to accommodate the piercing pain in your knees and before you know it, you are limping.

All of these could be due to knee deformities and with timely intervention, you can prevent this situation from getting worse, says Dr. Bharani Kumar Dayanandam, senior orthopaedic surgeon and trauma consultant at Chennai Orthopaedics. With more than two decades worth of rich experience in various fields related to orthopaedics like Arthroscopic Knee Surgery, Joint Arthroplasty, Osteotomy, etc., he is one of the most sought-after orthopaedic surgeons in South India.

The knee is the most complex of all the joints in our body. Deformities of the knee can make one’s life very difficult and painful. Knee deformities can befall a person at any age, and due to any reason. The two common types of knee deformities are varus deformity aka bowlegs and valgus deformity aka knock knee.

According to Dr. Bharani Kumar, the most common reason for the development of knee deformities is when one side of the knee gets worn off. Knee deformities can also occur as a result of injuries like fractures of the thigh bones or shin bones, bone malformations, obesity, and various other factors.

Most children have bowed knees which usually get resolved naturally by the age of ten. “There are growth plates on either side of the knee which has to grow equally. When there is a growth arrest in one of these plates, it causes uneven growth on that side of the knee leading to knee deformities in some cases” explains Dr. Bharani Kumar. These cases require medical assistance.

Corrective surgeries and knee replacements are the only two options available for treating a deformed knee. Knee Osteotomy helps to correct the bone alignment by cutting and reshaping your bones, it however does not touch your cartilage. It is the preferred treatment option for younger adults when the deformity is caused by cartilage wear and tear. It helps retain complete mobility of the joints and the patient can continue to participate in all forms of physical activities. “With Knee Osteotomy, the patient can go back to their normal life whereas, with total knee replacement, this will not be the case.”, says Dr. Bharani Kumar.

“Total knee replacement will allow a person to do basic activities like walking, but restrict them from activities such as jumping, running or following a more active lifestyle”, says Dr. Bharani. Therefore, a total knee replacement is usually suggested for older people. They could also opt for knee braces which are to be worn at all times.

Dr. Bharani Kumar’s advice to his patients is to consider these options when necessary - “these surgeries will correct the knee deformities, the pain will go away and you will be able to lead a normal, pain-free life.”
